This Privacy Policy describes how I collect, use, and handle your information when you use
Morpheem. I am committed to protecting your privacy and being transparent about my
practices.
Information I Collect
Morpheem collects and stores only the following limited information:
Username: A self-selected identifier that you choose when
creating your account. This username is not verified against your real identity. If you
sign up with Google or Apple, your username is taken from the part of your email address
before the @.
Password: If you use a password, it is stored in a
secure, hashed format and cannot be viewed by me in its original form.
Google Account ID (Optional): If you sign in with Google,
I store the identifier Google assigns to your Google account, so that I can recognize you
the next time you sign in. Google also sends your email address during sign-in; it is used
only to choose your username and is not stored.
Apple ID Identifier (Optional): If you sign in with
Apple, I store the identifier Apple assigns to your Apple ID, so that I can recognize you
the next time you sign in. Apple may also send your email address, or a private relay
address if you chose to hide it; it is used only to choose your username and is not
stored.
Email Address (Members Only): If you choose to become a
paying member, I collect your email address for account management and communication
purposes. This is required for membership but optional for free accounts.
Discord Username (Optional): You may choose to store your
Discord username with your account. This is entirely optional and can be added or removed
at any time.
Notification Address and Time Zone (Optional): If you
turn on notifications, I store the address your browser or phone provides for delivering
them (a push subscription or push token), together with the device's time zone, so that a
reminder reaches you at a sensible hour where you are. I also keep a record of each
notification sent and whether you opened it. The address is deleted when you turn
notifications off, or when the device stops accepting them. You can turn notifications off
at any time in the settings or in your browser or phone settings.
Session Cookie: A single cookie is used solely for
maintaining your login session. This cookie does not track you across websites and is
essential for the basic functionality of the service.
Activity Logs: I maintain logs of user activity on the
site. These logs contain information about actions taken on the site but are only linked
to an anonymized user ID, not to any personally identifiable information. Logs are
retained for at most one month.
Information I Do NOT Collect
I want to be clear about what I don't collect:
The following information is only collected from paying members: email address, real
name, payment information, country, postal code. This data is handled by Paddle, a third-party
payment processor.

Phone number
IP address
Geolocation data
Any other personally identifiable information
No Third-Party Tracking
Morpheem does not use:
Analytics services
Advertising trackers
Social media pixels
Any other third-party tracking technologies
AI Processing
Morpheem uses AI to evaluate your exercises. To do this, the answers you submit during
exercises are sent to third-party AI language model providers, currently OpenAI, Anthropic,
Groq, and Google.
This text is transmitted under these providers' standard paid API terms, which state that
your data is not used to train their models. Their handling of the data is governed by
their own privacy policies.
No identifying information is sent along with your answers — the providers receive the text
in isolation, with no way to attribute it to you.
Voice Recordings
Speaking exercises record your voice, and the app or site asks for permission to use your
microphone before the first one. Recording starts when you tap the record button on a
speaking exercise and stops when you tap it again, or by itself if you trail off. It never
happens in the background, and never while Morpheem is not open in front of you.
The recording is sent to Morpheem's server and passed straight on to a third-party
speech-to-text provider (currently Groq) to be turned into text, under the same paid API
terms described above: your audio is not used to train their models. It is sent without
your username or any other identifying information.
The audio itself is never stored. It is held in memory only for as long as the
transcription takes, and is discarded as soon as the text comes back. What is kept is the
transcription — the words you said — which is treated exactly like a typed answer: it is
used to evaluate the exercise and to track what you know.
Browser Extension
The "Send to Morpheem" browser extension adds the article you are reading to your Morpheem
reading room. It only does anything when you click its button, and then only reads the tab
that is open in front of you. It never runs in the background and never looks at other tabs
or your browsing history.
When you click the button, it sends a copy of the page's HTML (with scripts, styles and
embedded media removed) and the page's address to morpheem.org, together with the same login
cookie the site uses. Nothing else from your browser is collected.
Morpheem extracts the article from the page and saves its title, text and address as a story
in your account, visible only to you. The rest of the page is discarded and not stored. To
remove site clutter, adapt the text to your level where needed and, for members, draw an
illustration, the article text is sent to the AI providers described above, under the same
terms and without your username or any other identifying information. The page address
appears in the activity logs, which are kept for at most one month.
How I Use Your Information
The limited information I collect is used exclusively for:
Authenticating your access to the site
Providing and maintaining the service
Protecting the security of the site
Improving the user experience

I implement reasonable security measures to protect your information:
Passwords are securely hashed
Regular security updates to the systems
Information Sharing
I do not sell, rent, or trade your information. These are the only cases where data goes to
a third party:
Your exercise answers are sent to the AI language model providers described in the "AI
Processing" section above. No personally identifiable information is included.
For paying members, your payment and contact details are held by Paddle, the third-party
payment processor, as described above.
If you choose to sign in with Google, Google knows that you signed in to Morpheem. This is
covered by Google's own privacy policy. Nothing about your studies is shared with Google.
If you choose to sign in with Apple, Apple knows that you signed in to Morpheem. This is
covered by Apple's own privacy policy. Nothing about your studies is shared with Apple.
If you turn on notifications, each one is delivered through your browser's or phone's
push service (Apple, Google or Mozilla, depending on the device) and, for the app, through
Expo's push relay. These services see the notification address and the text of the
message, which is a short reminder, a note about your study streak, a summary of your week
or the title of a new text to read. They are not told who you are.
Changes to This Policy
I may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. I will notify users of any significant
changes by posting the new Privacy Policy on this page.
